About GOAL

GOAL is an international humanitarian organisation that has contributed over EUR 500 million in implementing relief and development programmes in 50 countries worldwide.

GOAL attempts to ensure that the poorest of the poor have access to the fundamental needs and rights of life: food, water, shelter, medical attention and literacy. The organisation has responded to nearly every major natural and man-made disaster in the past 32 years. It has rebuilt communities after natural disasters; assisted and repatriated millions of refugees in conflict zones; provided emergency food and shelter programmes; and developed rehabilitation and long-term development projects after emergencies.

GOAL also advocates on behalf of the poor. It attempts to convince the international community to honour its obligations to the poorest of the poor, and endeavours to exert as much pressure as possible on governments and other institutions with the capacity to bring about real change. It is currently seeking an international peacekeeping force in Sudan to protect the population of Darfur.

In Darfur, the level of insecurity had a significant impact on GOAL's programmes in 2006, leading to the closure of four clinics, affecting nearly 40,000 people, and the relocation of key staff from Kutum to El Fasher. Despite these setbacks, GOAL still provides essential health and nutrition services to over 110,000 people which can be attributed to outstanding performances by volunteers in the field (aka GOALies), in particular to the national GOAL staff in Kutum.

The ongoing plight of the Darfur population needs to be brought to the forefront of media attention once more. Please support GOAL's efforts in Darfur by donating to the charity and supporting its call for an independent peacekeeping force in the region.
